| Wednesday, 27 September, 2000, 18:59 GMT 19:59 UK Dame becomes Disco Diva ![]() The album is a new direction for Shirley Bassey She is a Dame and her career has stretched over 45 years, but that has not stopped singing star Shirley Bassey from taking a completely new musical route. The diva from the docks has collaborated with some of the hottest club acts around and released a dance album - a move which has surprised some of her fans.
In the 1990s, the 63-year-old signalled a change of direction by working with the Propellerheads on a remix of "History Repeating". Her songs have since been used by dance acts like Moloko and the Away Team. Another Welsh veteran Tom Jones teamed up successfully with young stars on "Reload" - the best-selling album of his career. Shirley too has stayed in the limelight - though not always in the charts. But the Remix Album is a hit with clubbers, and could soon propel the disco Dame back into the top 40. Shirley Bassey's career began at the age of 14 in the working men's clubs of her native Butetown in Cardiff. She had her first hit in 1957. Perhaps best-known for singing the theme songs to three James Bond movies, Miss Bassey had 29 best-selling albums between 1961 and 1991. She was created a Dame in July this year. |
