New home for London Welsh school
Ysgol Gymraeg Llundain
The school has reopened after finding a new home
The only Welsh medium school outside Wales has now found a new home.

After being left homeless at the end of last term by the sale of the Welsh chapel in Willesden, the London Welsh School has now moved to the annex of a primary school in Stonebridge, Brent.

The 30 full and part-time pupils began their new term last Friday after an agreement was finally reached by the school's trustees and governors.

But the school's long-term future is still undecided, since it must be self-financing.

Although it follows the Welsh curriculum, the National Assembly has so far refused to finance the school because it is in London.

The Department for Education will not give the school Voluntary Aided status, because it teaches the Welsh curriculum.

In June the Schools Minister, Estelle Morris, said The London Welsh School - or Ysgol Gymraeg Llundain - could not receive funding because it does not teach the national curriculum.

The school dates back to 1955 when Welsh language classes were started by two members of the London Welsh Association.

Within two years, it had been decided to extend the lessons by setting up a dedicated Welsh school.

By 1961, the school was set up at St David's Church in Paddington, west London, before it moved to its current site at the Welsh Chapel in Willesden, north west London.

In a bid to secure the school's future on a third London site, the Cardiff North MP Julie Morgan, had appealed to the Commons for funding.
