| Saturday, 9 September, 2000, 14:48 GMT 15:48 UK Bookmaker takes 1,000 Big Brother bet ![]() Mel is the seventh contestant to be evicted A branch of Coral in south Wales has taken 1,000 from a Port Talbot-based punter on who will scope the Big Brother 70,000 prize fund. The company is refusing to reveal which contestant they have backed.
With Melanie becoming the final contestant to be evicted, over the next week viewers will vote for one of the remaining three contestants to win the show, and pick up the money. The show's finale next Friday will see one contestant evicted during the 2030 BST programme, then phone lines will re-open to decide which of the two remaining contestants will win. Bookmakers are preparing for a rush of punters putting money on the show's winner. Emerging from the house, Melanie told Big Brother presenter Davina McCall she was "ready to go" and claimed she had totally enjoyed the whole experience.
"It was a rollercoaster of emotions but I am dreading watching the tapes of the show," said the 26-year-old advertising executive from London. She had been the bookies' favourite to go and was voted out by 69% of callers. The 26-year-old advertising executive was nominated for the first time alongside Darren and Craig in the final round of voting before the show's grand finale. Earlier in the series she caused a stir by sharing intimate kisses with former contestants Andrew and Thomas - moments that have not apparently endeared her to viewers' hearts. She said the Big Brother experience had been rewarding.
"I hoped to try to understand myself a bit better and that has happened without question," she said. Channel 4 also reported several attempts at vote rigging, including a rogue e-mail that offered a free holiday for anyone calling a number - which turned out to be Melanie's eviction vote line. Craig, Darren and Anna will now go through to the final stage of the game show next week. Craig remains favourite to win the series at 2-5, while former trainee nun Anna is second favourite at 7-4 and Darren is 20-1. |
