The summer is as big a problem as other times of the year

Police said that drink driving in the summer months is just as much a problem as at any other time of the year.

On Tuesday, all four forces across Wales have launched a campaign to remind drivers that they're as keen as ever to stamp out the problem.

A dedicated phoneline line has been set up so officers can be deployed quickly to catch drivers as they're on their way home.

But, officers say, its success depends on pub-goers actually reporting their fellow drinkers.

"One phone call about a drunken driver could save a life and certainly a lot of misery from the result of accidents involving drunk drivers," said Chief Inspector Mike Brook of South Wales Police.

Landlord Bob Jones shuttles patron home

Police are actively involving pub landlords in the campaign but many already have their own methods of keeping regulars out of trouble.

"We try to help customers who happen to be friends of ours," explained pub landlord Bob Jones.

"As far as we can we like to see the come back and not end up in a police station somewhere. So, if it gets to a stage where the drinking gets out of hand - maybe one or two many pints - we do provide a shuttle system home."
