Cash to tackle estate crime

Youth Inclusion Programmes aim to cut youth crime on estates
Housing estates in Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil and Wrexham are to get �300,000 each to help tackle youth crime.

The money - which will come from the Youth Justice Board as well as local funds - has been allocated to the Llanrumney esate in the Welsh capital, the Gurnos estate in Merthyr and the Caia Park in Wrexham, north Wales.

The aim of the investment to help establish various social programmes for young people aged between 13 and 16.

Initiatives will include after-school clubs, sports and arts training as well as special education classes and addictional support.

In conjunction In addition to these Youth Inclusion Programmes, more than 100 Summer Splash schemes are to begin around the UK this week - including Cardiff and Wrexham.

These will last for five weeks over the summer holidays and will encourage young people to become more involved in their community and to engage in sport and constructive recreation.

"Our aim at the Board is to prevent youth offending and that means working with young people before they come become embroiled in a life of crime," explained Louise Bennett, senior policy adviser.

"These things are being established on some of the most highly deprived estates across England and Wales."
