On Monday, the show's opening day, Assembly First Secretary Rhodri Morgan announced the sacking of Welsh Agriculture Secretary Christine Gwyther. Now Conservative Party leader and former Welsh Secretary William Hague is due to arrive on what is being described as a "listening exercise". The party hopes this will help them regain the rural vote in parts of Wales. Elsewhere on the showground FoodUK.com will be launched. It is claimed that the new internet service will help Welsh speciality food products Visitor numbers were up by 6,000 on Monday and show organisers are hoping for another big turnout. Lumberjacks have the chance to demonstrate their skills in a forestry competition while major cattle and sheep classes are also being judged. Tuesday is also Welsh cob day when the breed will be sharing centre stage with one of the highlights of this years show a mounted performance to music by the Household Calvary. On Monday, during the first day of the week-long show, Prince Charles spoke about his fear over a growing divide between town and country during the opening of the Royal Welsh Show. It was the first time in 25 years that a member of the Royal family opened Wales's top agricultural show. |
