Call centre to create 1,100 jobs
Pembroke Dock
The jobs are being created in an unemployment blackspot
Eleven hundred jobs are being created in Pembrokeshire as the TV company ONdigital takes over a purpose-built call centre there.

ONdigital has already employed 350 operators for the centre on the Cyber Park at Cleddau Bridge which will begin operating next week.

Subject to discussions with the Welsh Assembly, the company said it plans to increase the number to 600 by the end of the year, with a further 500 staff being taken on next year.

The news provides a welcome boost for the unemployment blackspot and comes just a month after the mobile telephone company Ist Line announced the closure of its call centres in Cardiff and Swansea with the loss of 2,00 jobs.

Assembly First Secretary Rhodri Morgan has welcomed the development, saying ONdigital was a key player in the rapidly developing digital TV sector.

This is only the beginning of what promises to be an exciting new era for the area

Rhodri Morgan

Mr Morgan announced in February that the purpose-built centre in Pembroke Dock's Cyber Bay business park at Cleddau Bridge was being taken over by the employment agency Manpower.

ONdigital, which is also expanding its Plymouth operation with an additional 400 jobs, has signed a three-year contract with specialist 7C.

Chief executive Stuart Prebble said the Pembroke centre marked another stage in the firm's development.

"The rapid growth of ONdigital's customer base and the roll-out of new services means we need to expand rapidly to handle the expected volume of demand."

Ingredients

Rhodri Morgan said the move would create a wide range of quality jobs for Pembrokeshire.

"This is only the beginning of what promises to be an exciting new era for the area ," he said.

"All the essential ingredients are now in place to see Cyber Bay develop into a centre of excellence."

"The local workforce on both sides of the Haven will have the opportunity to take a leading role in the technological revolution of electronic business and communications," Mr Morgan said.
