A woman was rescued by a North Wales Police helicopter crew after she slipped and hurt her back walking in snow and ice in Denbighshire. The woman, in her 50s, had landed on her back and was in considerable pain after the fall on New Year's Day. Sergeant Scott Gallagher said they were called in because the bad weather meant local ambulance crews could not reach the injured woman. There was also concern about the extent of the woman's injuries, he said. Both Caernarfon and Welshpool air ambulances could not reach the casualty because of the poor weather so the North Wales police helicopter was called in, said Sgt Scott. The helicopter landed at Llanferres close to the injured woman, dropping off crew, before going to collect a paramedic who had been unable to reach the casualty who was lying near a road. He added: "Conditions were treacherous as snow and ice covered the lane and at one point a passing 4x4 vehicle, although travelling slowly, had difficulty stopping and local people were able to prevent the vehicle colliding with the emergency services in attendance. " The woman was then airlifted to hospital. The police officer added: "This incident highlights just how important it is to be properly prepared for all weather conditions when going out to enjoy the scenery."
