BBC Wales News has learned that horses and ponies are being sold in markets across the country for as little as �1 each.

Massive overbreeding of the animals is being blamed for the huge drop in price and the RSPCA is warning that the situation is spiralling out of control.

Sixty horses and ponies are waiting to be rehomed across Wales.

Some have been abandoned by owners unwilling or unable to pay for their animals upkeep, while others have been rescued by the RSPCA.

Superintendent Kevin Manning said the problem is reaching a crisis point.

In Swansea's Townhill and Mayhill estates, an increasing number are being left free to roam the streets.

That is indicative said the RSPCA of a situation where a pony can cost less than the price of a pint.
