South Wales Police name new chief

Peter Vaughan

The new chief constable of South Wales Police has been named as the current deputy, Peter Vaughan.

He will lead the force from next year, taking over from Barbara Wilding, who is retiring.

Mr Vaughan joined the force as a graduate in 1984, serving in the area for 19 years before becoming assistant chief constable in Wiltshire.

He returned in 2007, and was promoted to his current rank. A father-of-two, he takes up his post on 1 January.

As well as his role with South Wales Police, Mr Vaughan is also responsible for developing national policies on police dogs for the Association of Chief Police Officers.

His appointment comes as North Wales Police continue their search for a new chief constable, after the retirement of Richard Brunstrom.
