Lawn company creates 1,000 jobs

The company says more people are investing in their homes and gardens

A company which maintains garden lawns is to create 1,000 new jobs as more people invest in their homes rather than move during the recession.

GreenThumb, which has 186 branches across the UK, predicted a 25% growth in business over the next two years.

The new jobs will include admin staff, managers, operatives and workers who provide quotes for customers.

David Collison, of GreenThumb, which is based in St Asaph, Denbighshire, said business had boomed in the recession.

"We've grown steadily year on year over the past two-and- a-half decades, but since the recession our growth has accelerated dramatically," said Mr Collison, the firm's marketing manager.

"People are deciding to improve their properties rather than move. If they're not going away so much in the slump they want to enjoy their gardens."

The company treats lawn problems such as moss, weeds and fungal diseases.

It is expecting its annual turnover to be £100m by 2012.
