Paintings by Wilson are highly prized but the one owned by Paul Waters, landlord of the We Three Loggerheads in Flintshire, has been outdoors for over 200 years - as a sign outside the pub. Now, it is in need of a safer home.
Born in Montgomeryshire in 1713, he is regarded as the father of landscape painting in Britain and had a huge influence on artists like Constable and Turner. In his heyday he painted royalty and was a founder member of the Royal Academy. But his heavy drinking diminished much of his fortune and when he fell out of favour he was forced to move in with relatives living near Mold. This pub became a favourite haunt - and also the source of his next commission. The landlord asked him to paint two other customers - a wealthy landowner and parish priest who had fallen out.
It languished outside for over 200 years before being brought indoors and put under glass in the bar when Wilson's work became fashionable again. Now the current landlord wants to find a safer home for it in a museum. It is insured at a conservative 30,000 - but the value and the premium are probably on the rise. Customers though, think it has already found its spiritual home. |
