A bizarre race dedicated to the late Screaming Lord Sutch ended with a man beating a horse to the finish line.

The legendary Man versus Horse Race in mid Wales witnessed 35-year-old Royal Marine Corporal Mark Croasdale beat a four-legged challenger over a gruelling 22-mile course.

Cpl Croasdale - 22nd at this year's London Marathon - won in a time of two hours 10 minutes and nine seconds.

His equine opponent, Roama, ridden by local woman Jackie Gilmore, finished in two hours 22 minutes 41 seconds.

Cpl Croasdale stepped up to receive the William Hill Lord Sutch Memorial Man v Horse Trophy and a cheque for �1,000, from Lord Sutch's fiancee Yvonne Elwood.

A special one-on-one race this year had been dedicated to Lord Sutch, the man who made the Monster Raving Loony Party a household name.

One of Britain's best-loved eccentrics - was the competition's official starter at Llanwrtyd Wells.

But he killed himself just three days after appearing at the event last year, which is traditionally hosted by the Neuadd Arms.

Lord Sutch became involved in the race between man and beast 10 years ago after he was introduced to the tradition by Graham Sharpe of bookmakers William Hill.

The company offers a prize of �20,000 for the first human runner to out-pace the first horse.

The event this year - the 21st anniversary of the first race - attracted competitors from America, Sweden and Morocco..

Following the death of Lord Sutch, the party chose joint leaders - a cat called Cat Mandu and Alan Howling Laud Hope.
