Forecasters predicted snow for many parts of the UK

Wales is expected to escape a winter whiteout as heavy snow falls in parts of northern England and Scotland.

Overnight, snow is only reported to have fallen on higher ground in areas of the Clwydian hills and Denbigh Moors, and also in the Bala area.

The Rhigos mountain road in the Cynon Valley has also been closed to traffic due to icy conditions.

Heavy rain also caused some road flooding in the Sageston area of Pembrokeshire.

Up to 2in (5cm) of snow was predicted for higher ground in Wales, with up to 8in (20cm) in other parts of the UK.

The heaviest forecast has been for north east Wales, with accumulations on the Clwydian hills, Denbighshire moors and Halkyn mountain.

BBC Wales meteorologist Derek Brockway said: "Some parts of Wales will see some snow, but we're not going to get snowed in."

It has been an entirely different start to Thursday in other parts of the UK, with a hundred schools expected to close for the day across Lancashire, and another 50 in West Yorkshire.

Blizzard conditions have closed some transpennine routes, and the main A1(M) northbound in north Yorkshire.
