| Thursday, 1 June, 2000, 18:46 GMT 19:46 UK Wembley's future as paperweights ![]() Wembley Stadium will be processed into souvenirs A company from Wales has won the rights to turn chunks of Wembley Stadium into cufflinks and paperweights when it is demolished. Excel Promotional Productions will also turn crushed concrete from the best-known football stadium in the world into souvenir key rings. The move follows a similar venture involving the old Cardiff Arms Park.
Thousands of souvenirs had been made from the old stadium's rubble and sent to rugby fans all over the world. The smashed slabs of concrete and stone are crushed into powder before being processed and then sculpted into mementoes. The company has already received a limited amount of stone from early demolition work at Wembley and samples have been designed and manufactured. The tiny replica of Wembley measures five inches by four inches and shows the stands in fine detail. Excel's sales and marketing director Howard Robins said: "The name Wembley is instantly recognisable around the world. "The mementoes will provide memories of the stadium for thousands of fans." Wembley's End-Of-An-Era manager Alan Stevenson said: "The firm has come up with an excellent idea. "The souvenirs are very well made and will provide long-lasting memories for sports fans." |
