| Tuesday, 23 May, 2000, 17:21 GMT 18:21 UK Wylfa could operate until 2016 ![]() British Nuclear Fuels aims to keep Wylfa in operation Magnox BNFL has confirmed it intends to keep Wylfa nuclear power station open and generating electricity until 2016 - or possibly 2021. The company's current operating licence runs up until 2004. A spokesman for Magnox BNFL said the company had always hoped Wylfa, which opened in 1970, would be in operation for 50 years.
But Friends of the Earth Cymru said the decision to keep Wylfa running was regrettable. FoEC spokesperson Neil Crumpton said the pressure group would like to see Wylfa closed down by the end of its current operating licence in 2004. "No gas power station proposals should even be considered in north Wales unless Wylfa closes," said Mr Crumpton. It was confirmed earlier this month that the Anglesey power station would be out of action for up to a month for checks on both its reactors. Mystery marks were found in one reactor shut down for its annual overhaul. The second reactor was closed as well as a precaution. British Nuclear Fuels said there was no threat to safety. The marks were found by a remote television camera. There are four channels in each reactor core through which a television camera can be lowered during a reactor's annual overhaul. |
