The series, edited by Paul Islwyn Thomas, also won the Best Graphic category with Brian Carroll collecting the prize.

The Stereophonics Live at Morfa, produced by Avanti for BBC Wales, took award for Best Music Programme and The Canterbury Tales, co-produced with S4C, was voted Best Animation.

Drama series Jack of Hearts took the prize for Best Sound with sound men Richard Dyer, Paul Jeffries and Tim Ricketts receiving the award.

The Award for Best Original Music went to The Big Picture, the series on Welsh art, produced for BBC Wales by Element Productions.

The ninth awards ceremony was attended by 1,300 guests with Ioan Gruffudd, Colin Jackson, Tim Vincent, Julien McDonald and First Secretary Rhodri Morgan presenting the awards.

Guests at the gala event were treated to a millennium-style spectacle of pyrotechnics, special effects and giant concert screens.

Bafta Cymru director Gethin While said he was pleased to see Welsh productions making headway in the competitive entertainment world.

"We seem to be on the way to cracking the nut of selling programmes in international markets, raising finance and giving a wider public than our own a taste of our culture and values," said Mr While.

"Many of the nominations indicate a trend towards a mixture of media, heralding the way for more focus on interactivity and new broadcast media."
