3,000 people a year are killed or injured in drink-drive accidents |
Police in Wales have warned motorists to expect breath tests 24 hours a day as they begin the festive drink-driving crackdown. The four Welsh forces say a minority persist in believing they can continue to break the law.
Last Christmas 14,000 drivers in Wales were breathalysed, and 600 were banned.
Inspector Carwyn Evans of South Wales Police said: "You run the risk of killing yourself, your passengers, and other innocent road users."
Police will also increase the number of vehicle checks during the party season and festive period.
Insp Evans said: "We are not out to spoil anyone's fun over Christmas, however, there remains to be a minority of people who still think they can get away with it.
"We are committed to educating drivers. However, let there be no mistake, we are also committed to enforcing the drink-drive laws rigorously."
This year sees a series of TV adverts warning that a drink-drive conviction can mean the loss of a licence, job, and heavy fine.
Deputy First Minister and Transport Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said: "Drink-driving costs more than lives and I am urging drivers to leave their cars at home if they are out socialising this Christmas.
"Drink-drivers are a danger to themselves and others, and there is no place for them on our roads in Wales."
Giles York, assistant chief constable of South Wales Police, said: "Last year, over 14,000 motorists were breathalysed, so our message to all drivers is: 'Don't drink and drive because you will get caught'."
