Bill Lockwood suffered serious head injuries in the crash

Bill Lockwood was almost at his father's house in Canton, Cardiff, when he was struck by the motorcycle driven by Alan Carter, 32, in January.

Bill and his friend Daniel Ramado, also 15, were crossing Cowbridge Road East when he was hit, a jury heard.

Mr Carter, from Penarth, denies causing death by dangerous driving.

Learner driver David Coleman, 18, estimated the motorbike, a 125cc Yamaha, was doing 40 - 50mph when it approached green traffic lights before the collision.

The court heard he told friends: "Lucky the lights didn't change to red because he wouldn't have been able to stop."

Seconds later he heard a skid and a crash and saw Bill lying on the ground.

He suffered serious head injuries in the crash. Mr Carter escaped serious injury.

Prosecutor Martyn Kelly said of Mr Carter: "His standard of driving in damp conditions when it was dark fell well below standard."

Mr Ramado told the court the two had gone to rental shop Choices for a DVD, then had bought burgers and chips.

He said: "I stepped out to cross and heard the bike and stepped back but Bill was hit."
