| Wednesday, 12 April, 2000, 08:15 GMT 09:15 UK Miners return to work after strike ![]() The morning shift at Tower will resume as normal Miners have returned to work at the last deep mine in Wales after an unofficial strike was resolved. During a heated meeting, 240 miners voted on Tuesday night to end the dispute at Tower Colliery at Hirwaun, Cynon Valley, which had brought production to a halt. Coaling at the pit - which made history when it was bought out by its workforce to save it from closure five years ago - stopped when 40 faceworkers refused to go underground after two men were moved.
A union spokesman said a compromise had been reached with managers and the morning shift is due to start as normal on Wednesday. The dispute began on Monday when 10 workers on the morning shift walked out following a row over moving two men from the coal face. The dispute escalated to the afternoon shift. On Tuesday morning the workforce walked out en masse following a meeting with managers which lasted for more than an hour. It is believed to be the first time an industrial dispute has stopped production at the pit since the buyout . On Tuesday, one of the Tower's managers said the men must now realise that they own the colliery. A dispute like this, he said, can only damage their future. |
