"Great player, greater man". So read the first tribute in a condolence book opened in Llanelli to rugby legend Ray Gravell on Thursday morning.
Hours after the news of his sudden death at the age of 56 while on holiday in Spain, flags outside the town hall and Carmarthenshire county hall were at half-mast.
Carmarthenshire Council leader Meryl Gravell - who is no relation - said: "It is unprecedented to do this other than for royalty, but to the people of Carmarthenshire Ray Gravell was royalty."
Admirers began leaving flowers at the gates of the club's Stradey Park ground after news of his sudden death on holiday at the age of 56.

In his home village of Mynyddygarreg neighbours were desperately upset by the news.
Pamela Smith said: "I have known him since he was a boy - we grew up in the same street and we went to school as kids.
"He was one of three life members of our local rugby club - my husband is one of the others. My husband could not stop crying last night.
"He is really going to be missed. He was into everything and would always get the kids involved - with the school, concerts, Halloween, everything."
People in Llanelli echoed the sentiments of both the rugby and political worlds when they spoke of the loss of a true great.
One, Roy Davies, 46, said: "It's very sad news.
"He was a true gentleman and it's a bad day for the town.
"You won't find anyone who'll say a bad word about him and there's not many you can say that about."
'Bigger than rugby'
The player was born and brought up in Carmarthenshire, where local people said there was huge affection for him.
Another fan, Steve Jennings said: "He was one of the greats.

"He loved rugby and showed more heart and passion than the professionals who are paid so much today."
Carmarthenshire Council leader Meryl Gravell said: "Ray Gravell was bigger than rugby.
"His contribution did not end when he retired from an inspirational playing career for Llanelli and Wales.
"He went on to carve out a new career for himself in acting and broadcasting while maintaining his links with the Scarlets.
"He was unique and touched everyone's hearts because he was in everyone's homes through the radio.
"Ray was very supportive to me as leader of the council and we shared many a stage.
"He was a great ambassador for rugby, Carmarthenshire and Wales."
