| Wednesday, 5 April, 2000, 15:06 GMT 16:06 UK Prisoner charged with cell murder ![]() The incident happened at Cardiff Prison A man accused of the murder of an inmate at Cardiff Prison has appeared before magistrates. Jason Ricketts is charged with the murder of 35-year-old Colin Bloomfield. Ricketts, from the Grangetown area of Cardiff, appeared briefly before the city's magistrates on Wednesday afternoon. He was remanded in custody for seven days until 12 April. Bloomfield, from Newport, was pronounced dead in the jail's vulnerable prisoners' unit at BST 2230 on Sunday. Prison officers found him on his bed with severe abdominal and facial injuries. He had been serving a six-month sentence after being jailed at Newport Crown Court on 24 March. In addition to the South Wales Police investigation, the Prison Service is carrying out its own inquiry into the death. A post mortem examination was carried out on Monday and initial results showed that further tests were needed. |
