Among them was 15-year-old Clare Walters, a pupil at St Joseph's School in Wrexham.
BBC Wales followed students including Clare as they got their results. This is her story...
The adrenaline is pumping through my body! I can't believe how well I've done. I arrived at school and had an agonising wait for a whole hour before I finally received my results....on live television!
My mind was filled with worries that I didn't work hard enough, that I could have revised just that little bit longer.
I was surrounded by people who were so excited to have received the grades they wanted and I couldn't help but wish that time would go faster.
I watched my friends nervously wander towards the table where our head of year was giving out the results and come back with their faces streaming with tears of happiness.
Watching them made me long for my results.
Standing alongside my best friend, with our hands clasped so tight, the wait was finally over and the hard work had paid off; five A-stars, six As and one B.
I felt like I was dreaming - I had done so much better than I had expected.
Out of all the exams, the two that I especially wanted to do well in were Drama and English Literature and I received As in both!
I was extremely suprised at the two A-stars I gained in Science as this was one of the exams that I found the hardest, especially the Physics side of it!
But this now means that I can enrol on my A-level courses for next year; Dance, Music, English Literature and French.
My dream of performing can still come true.
