Flood anniversary brings memories and fears

Towyn flood
Flood victims in Towyn had to wait months, even years, to return home

Ten years after flood water breached the north Wales coastline defences there have been calls for tighter controls on new building in low lying areas.

Millions of pounds have been spent on coastal protection schemes but some scientists believe there is a new risk from global warming.

It was 10 years ago this month when a combination of gale force winds and a high tide caused a massive breach through sea defence barriers and flooded the town of Towyn.

Thousands of people were evacuated and most could not return home for months afterwards.

Others had to wait years to move back into their homes.

Floods Thousands of homes were flooded
But now that new housing estates are being built around the town some locals fear another disaster may happen.

Work to strengthen sea defences all along the north Wales coast has been going on over the past decade.

But local GP and long-time campaigner Stuart Anderson said he was worried about the number of new houses being built in Towyn and neighbouring Kinmel Bay.

"Potentially in the future as you look forward 50 to 80 years, as some projected, with rising sea levels from global warming we really do have a responsibility not to add extra problems," he said.
