| Sunday, 20 February, 2000, 14:12 GMT Football fan celebrates 106th birthday Edith Jones has lived in three centuriesWrexham Football Club's oldest fan has received her seventh telegram from the Queen. Edith Ann Jones celebrated her 106th birthday with other residents at the Stansty Nursing Home in the town. She moved there after living for 101 years in the cottage where she was born in Penycae. Edith was joined for the birthday celebrations by her sister Alice, 97, who also lives at the home, and her family and friends
Her late husband Richard Jones was a prominent football player with Wrexham and Edith is still a keen supporter. Last year, she received a Wrexham scarf. calendar and football in a visit from one of the team's players. Born in the reign of Queen Victoria, Edith has memories spanning three centuries and many experiences to pass on. She recalls an early trip out of town in a horse and carriage. Known as Auntie Nan to her family, Edith was one of eight children - four boys and four girls. Her mother died at a young age and Edith was called on to look after the family. For many years, she worshipped at St Thomas's and was a member of the parochial church council. |
