Wales' top politicians do battle
Trish Law and Peter Hain
Trish Law and Peter Hain are competing for Politician of the Year
As the end of 2006 approaches the annual roll of honour for the political movers and shakers of the past 12 months is being meticulously prepared.

BBC Wales' political discussion TV programme am.pm has shortlisted the biggest beasts of Wales' political jungle for the Welsh Politicians of the Year Awards.

The highest accolade, Welsh Politician of the Year, was won in 2005 by the late Peter Law.

This year his widow, Trish, is nominated, after successfully keeping the Blaenau Gwent assembly seat independent, despite Labour's best efforts to win it back in a by-election.

She faces competition from Wales and Northern Ireland secretary Peter Hain.

He persuaded devo-sceptic Welsh Labour MPs to back law-making powers for Cardiff Bay and now appears close to restoring power sharing in Stormont.

Cheryl Gillan

Also lining up for the top gong is Plaid Cymru's Adam Price for his dogged campaign against the war in Iraq.

It culminated in a parliamentary vote in which 12 Labour MPs voted with the opposition.

Political fancy

The assembly's dapper and occasionally mischievous presiding officer, Dafydd Elis-Thomas, is again nominated for Politician of the Year.

Assembly government finance, local government and public services minister Sue Essex is also in with a shout, as is shadow secretary of state for Wales Cheryl Gillan.

A panel will chose the Politician of the Year, along with the most outspoken, best communicator and best local campaigner.

But you can decide the Political Moment of the Year.

Was it the opening of the new assembly building, the Senedd, Trish Law and Dai Davies' double by-election victory in Blaenau Gwent or Elfyn Llwyd's bitter row with Peter Hain?

Other events which might have tickled your political fancy were Plaid Cymru's Commons debate on Iraq, Chris Bryant's letter calling on the prime minister to name a departure date and the red-faced health minister, Brian Gibbons, pressing the wrong button and triggering an enquiry into the Wales Ambulance Service.

The awards take place on 5 December in the Senedd and can be seen on am.pm on BBC Two Wales from 1130 GMT on 6 December.
