| Thursday, 20 January, 2000, 13:25 GMT Inquiry into soldier's shooting
Investigations are continuing into the accidental shooting of a soldier during a training exercise on an Army firing range. The Army's Special Investigations Branch and Training Accident Investigation Team are looking into how the soldier was shot in the back on the range in Sennybridge, near Brecon on Wednesday. The soldier, who is believed to be a signaller, spent a comfortable night at Morriston Hospital in Swansea where he was airlifted by police helicopter. He is expected to spend several more days in hospital. Safety review Dyfed-Powys Police say they are treating the shooting as a freak accident and are satisfied there was nothing suspicious about the incident. But the MP for Brecon and Radnor Richard Livsey has called for a wholesale review of safety at the ranges. Last week 14 soldiers were hurt when a lorry overturned on a steep hill. And two years ago a soldier was killed when he was hit by live amunition. Criticism The training ranges at Sennybridge in Powys make up one of the British army's largest training centres. An investigation is still underway after grenadier guardsman Richard King was killed on the ranges two years ago. The Army was criticised after an inquest failed to establish why live instead of blank bullets were fired. |
