Council worries over lack of funding

National Assembly building The National Assembly has not been forthcoming with funding

A council in north Wales has expressed "extreme concern" that money from the National Assembly to fund improvements to education and social services has not been forthcoming.

Wrexham council says it was surprised to find it is expected to find the money for improvements to the services locally.

The authority's comments follow discussions about its budget, which have now been postponed pending further talks with local Assembly Members.

The council says although the Assembly has agreed it can spend an extra 7m in the next financial year, it is "very disappointed" that the Assembly is not planning to increase its own contribution to the council.

'Rise in bills'

They say in order to deliver service improvements local council tax payers can expect a 10% rise in bills.

The council says it had been led to believe that the Assembly would provide the money for improvements to education and social services.

Without the money, the council says cuts to other services, which are already "cut to the bone", are inevitable.

The council will meet again on Tuesday to discuss the proposals.
