Electricity deal secures jobs

Anglesey Alumnium Jobs at Anglesey Aluminium are safe for the next five years

The future of over 500 jobs at a north Wales metals plant have been secured following talks with its electricty supplier.

The Anglesey Aluminium plant at Holyhead employs 570 people and is the biggest employer on the island.

A spokesman for the plant said the jobs were now secure following an agreement between the company and its electricity supplier, Magnox Electric.

There had been concern the plant would have to close if it was unable to obtain a new five year supply of power at a competitive price.

The works will continue to receive its power direct from Wylfa nuclear power station under the new agreement.

Scheduled to close

But Wylfa, which is operated by Magnox electric, is scheduled to close down in the next fifteen years.

Anglesey Aluminium has already pledged its support for two new gas-fired electricity generating plants which may be built on the former oil refinery site at Rhosgoch.

The government has already announced a moratorium on the building of new stations in order to benefit the coal industry.

A spokesman for Anglesey Aluminium said the company was pleased its future was assured for the next five years but stressed there had to be long term certainty if it was to continue in business.
