The Prince of Wales was guest of honour at the Millennium Stadium for a special edition of Songs of Praise.

The Prince was joined by his sons - Prince William and Prince Harry - at the event was attended by 66,000 people.

The princes attended a millennium church service at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in The Hayes, Cardiff, before travelling the short distance to the stadium.

The Songs of Praise edition was the largest broadcast event in the programme's 38-year history and was broadcast live on BBC One on Sunday.

Sir Cliff Richard performed his hit song Millennium Prayer supported by the 5,000-strong BBC Wales Choir of Choirs and an orchestra of 100 harps.

Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel, Irish singer Daniel O'Donnell, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and the Band of the Welsh Guards also took part in the event.

It was the first Songs of Praise programme of the millennium and tickets for the event were sold out within a month of going on sale.

Millennium Tapestry Project

Six tapestries created by Swansea schoolchildren have were chosen to adorn the stadium for the performance.

The work was part of the Millennium Tapestry Project, a UK-wide project which will eventually go on display at the Millennium Dome.

Over 40 Swansea schools took part in creating the tapestries and was the first Local Education Authority area in Wales to complete the project.

Every school had to create one square metre of canvas which illustrated children's lives, their hopes, their aspirations, and the local, national and global issues that affect them.

Works exhibited

The children worked on the tapestry for a period of time each day.

The project ended up involving the whole community with parents and dinner ladies helping out in their spare time.

The first squares of the huge works were exhibited at County Hall in Swansea during July 1999.
