The traditional Gower pastime of clog dancing is being included in a new scheme to promote physical education in Welsh schools.

The National Playing Fields Association launched its school sports awards competition in Swansea challenging them to come up with new ideas to get youngsters involved in sport.

The point made by the Awards scheme is that PE does not have to be just about rugby and football.

So as well as aerobics and gymnastics at the opening at Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr in Gowerton there was a group demonstrating traditional Welsh clog dancing.

The National Assembly has made clear that time devoted to PE must be included in the Curriculum, as part of a balanced education.

Education Secretary Rosemary Butler said moves were in place to widen the variety of games offered to children by September 2000.

"If a child is to have a healthy mind they must have a healthy body," she said.

"One of the ideas is to make sure that pupils in Wales lead healthy lifestyles.

"We are giving schools the option of widening the kind of sporting activity the children take part in."

Former Wales captain Gwyn Jones who helped launch the campaign confessed to doing a spot of clog dancing himself.

"I kept it a secret but used to do a bit of singing and dancing when I was in school," he said.

"I think it's important to develop a wide variety of skills - even if you have to keep some of them secret!"
