Welsh opera star Bryn Terfel is taking the title role in the refurbished Royal Opera House's new season. The 214m refurbishment of London's main opera venue has put it in the premier league of concert venues. At only 34, Bryn Terfel has beaten many of the world's best performers to gain this accolade. Bryn, who will be playing the lead in Verdi's Falstaff, believes this to be a huge honour. Bright future The opera house has not been without its critics, but the star predicts a bright future for Covent Garden and he dismisses the allegation that opera is irrelevant to ordinary people. Staff at the new look opera house say it is more accessible to the public with bars and extra rooms for different types of performances. With just hours to go everyone is working against the clock - the set design is being kept under wraps and the costume department is still working on the finishing touches. |
