Assembly rejects teachers' performance pay
Cclassroom Parties unite to reject pay linked to pupil results

The government of Wales has suffered its first official setback in its plans for performance-related pay for teachers in Wales.

The opposition parties in the National Assembly have united behind a rejection of a plan to link teachers' pay to pupil performance and exam results.

In Wednesday's meeting of the Pre-16 Education Committee, the opposition first challenged the agenda to force a discussion on the issue.

Rosemary Butler Rosemary Butler, Pre-16 Education Secretary, abstained
They then passed a series of resolutions on the government's proposals.

The first was that the introduction of teachers' pay linked to the results of pupils' external examinations would harm the teaching profession and schools in Wales.

The committee voted that recommendations for such proposals should be withdrawn from the scheme.

The resolutions were carried by 6-2, with the Pre-16 Education Secretary, Rosemary Butler, abstaining.

Listening to more evidence

At the end of the discussion, Mrs Butler thanked the committee for its views - which, she said, were no more important than anyone else's.

She said she would be listening to a range of organisations before reaching her final decisions and putting the matter to a full session of the Assembly for the final say.

Performance-related pay, based on an appraisal system linked to pupils' results, has been strongly opposed by teachers' unions.
