A businessman has paid 420 for a pair of underpants worn by Welsh film star Rhys Ifans in the movie Notting Hill. Bidder Gary Wyn Jones says he intends to frame the underpants, which the actor donated to an auction in his hometown of Ruthin, north Wales, to raise money for the 2001 Eisteddfod to be staged in nearby Denbigh. The31-year-old actor - who starred in Notting Hill alongside Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts - autographed the pants and also wrote on them "Ti'n lyfli, Rhys Ifans". Translated from Welsh into English, that means "you're lovely" but also has a double entendre in Welsh. "If Rhys Ifans becomes an even bigger star over the next ten years or so, I'll offer them for auction again in aid of the National Eisteddfod," Mr Wyn Jones said. Notting Hill has emerged as the biggest-grossing British movie of all time. It stars Hugh Grant as a bookshop owner who meets an international film star - played by Julia Roberts - and falls in love. Rhys Ifans plays his outrageous flatmate Spike who, aptly enough appears at the most inopportune moments in his underpants. |
