Wales gave its all for the last BBC Children in Need appeal of the millennium, raising a total of 532.686.

The total raised across the UK stood at a huge 11,639,053.

Singing sensation Charlotte Church joined in the fun at BBC Wales headquarters in Cardiff, with the song Just Wave Hello, accompanied by Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion.

Up-and-coming young star Jamie Shaw and the world's favourite Phantom of the Opera, Peter Karrie, also joined in.

And the band Another Level flew into Cardiff International Airport to join in a Beatles medley alongside acts across the UK.

BBC Animal Hospital's Rhodri Williams joined BBC Wales presenter Frances Donovan to host the BBC Wales show, joined by hundreds of enthusiastic fundraisers.

Four children from Wales appeared with Martine McCutcheon in London to sing her new record Love Me.

Proceeds from the single's sale will go to Children in Need.

Mark Antolin and Christine Modestou from Port Talbot, Saul Woods from Swansea and Amy Powell-Yeates from Pontypool were picked from thousands of children to join the 100-strong choir singing with Martine on the single.

Nation serenaded

BBC Radio Cymru and Radio Wales presenter Chris Needs entertained with songs as well as updating the Welsh running total throughout the night.

In an adjoining studio, Radio Wales presenter Owen Money broadcast live across the airwaves, with dozens of members of the audience joining him on the microphone to serenade the Welsh nation.

Presenters Kevin Hughes and Lisa Matthews kept listeners updated with the latest news about the appeal alongside Owen.

A Radio Wales auction also saw plenty of cash pledged to win the chance to have Kevin Hughes DJ at a school party and to help present several Radio Wales shows.

Top of the bids was 450 pledged to present the afternoon entertainment show Four Star alongside regular host Lisa Barsi.

"It's incredible," said BBC Wales controller Geraint Talfan Davies.

'Brightest stars'

"Year after year we have seen so many people donate their time, energy and money, and this year is no different.

"It was a wonderful evening featuring some of the brightest stars in Wales, including Charlotte Church and Peter Karrie.

"At the same time, of course, thousands of pledges have reached BBC Wales.

"The final amount is fantastic and our thanks go out to everybody who's supported this BBC charity once again," he added.

Jenny Lewis, national co-ordinator for Wales, said: " This is a very heart-warming result - our thanks to the people of Wales."
