St Mary Street is one of the busiest roads in Cardiff city centre

Researchers found it to be among the worst places in Britain for car crime and high petrol prices.

It was also highlighted for the number of speed cameras on roads throughout the city.

The results follow another survey, which claimed that traffic problems were "worse than London". Dundee came out as the most car friendly place.

As well as Cardiff, other cities and towns in the UK came out as bad places to drive a car including Nottingham, Birmingham, London and Reading.

Towns and cities were ranked according to factors including petrol prices, the availability and cost of car parks and the level of car crime.

In March, the Cardiff Community Safety Partnership said the city had three and a half times more car crime than house burglaries.

Nearly 10,000 vehicles were broken into or stolen in the last year with an average of one car an hour targeted.

According to South Wales Police despite car crime dropping overall within the force boundaries, the problem has actually increased in Cardiff.

Virgin Money said it had carried out its survey using data from the Office of National Statistics and the Association of British Drivers as well as other sources in order to act as a guide for people planning trips.

Jason Wyer-Smith, of Virgin Money said: "Every motorist will have their own complaints about their home town and its driving experience.
