'World Cup' drink-drive campaign
Drink drive suspect is interviewed at roadside
Police have urged drivers not to drink during the World Cup
Motorists across Wales are being warned not to drink and drive during the World Cup football tournament.

All four Welsh police forces launch a summer crackdown on Monday on people who go behind the wheel after drinking.

Last year a similar campaign found almost a third of drivers stopped were over the drink-drive limit.

In a joint statement, the forces said: "Make this a summer to remember for all the right reasons, not to regret for all the wrong ones."

North Wales Police is the lead force in this summer's anti-drink-drive campaign.

Superintendent Geraint Anwyl, head of the force's Operational Support Division, said drivers could expect the likelihood of being stopped by the police during this time to increase.

He said: "Any amount of alcohol or drugs in the body can affect a person's driving ability and judgment.

"Despite previous campaigns, people are still being killed or seriously injured as a direct result of this reckless practice.

"It is a major concern that in the 2005 campaign 10% to 31% of young drivers between the age of 17 and 25 tested positive for driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs."

The campaign will be launched at Queens Square in Wrexham.

Chief Inspector Phil Davies, for Dyfed Powys Police, said: "Drink or drug driving is an all year problem and those who drink or drug-drive should be under no illusion as to the extent of the police commitment to detecting and prosecuting drink drivers.

"We will continue to enforce the drink-driving law firmly and without favour in an attempt to reduce the death toll even further and to continue the success of this campaign."
