The Cardiff Castle bed was thought to have been lost

A unique bed designed by the architect William Burges for the third Marquess of Bute goes under the hammer in London.

The Bute bed was thought to have been lost after being sold along with other contents from Cardiff Castle in 1949.

BBC Wales's Sian Lloyd: "The bed is expected to raise up to 150,000."
It was found recently in outbuildings on the outskirts of Paris and experts from the auction house Christie's recognised the historic bed from a photograph.

Adam Chadwick of auction house Christie's says the bed is one of the highlights of the sale.

"Unlike some of the Burges's patrons, the Marquess of Bute had a lot to do with the design," he explains.

"Various emblems on it were designed to be fully incorporated and matching to various other items in the bedroom."

Originally designed for the bachelor bedroom in Cardiff Castle's Clock Tower, William Burges's masterpiece is one of the highlights of the sale.

Handcrafted and inlaid with minerals, the Bute Bed is richly decorated with heraldic motiff.

It is expected to raise up to 150,000.
