The long-running dispute over where to place a life-size bronze statue, commemorating the life of boxer Eddie Thomas has ended. The statue, created after money poured in from all over the world following his death, has remained in storage because a memorial committee and Merthyr council could not agree on a suitable site.
It will now be placed in a memorial garden near the town centre.
Merthyr council refused to allow it to be put up outside the town hall and the memorial committee turned down an offer to place it near the town's sports hall. From his humble beginnings as a miner, Eddie Thomas rose to become British, Empire and European champion. In April 1992 he received the Freedom of Merthyr.
After his death almost two years ago, it took just seven months to raise the 30,000 needed to create the statue in his memory.
