Critics of the proposed changes warn that the reorganisation could threaten the future of Welsh language theatre.
Funding there will increase to a �1m a year for the next three years. But Theatr Gwynedd in Bangor and Theatr Bara Caws are to be merged, with no increase in their combined budget of �300,000. Critics say Welsh language productions look set to lose out: Nic Ross, Former Drama Advisor to the Arts Council of Wales said: "It's not clear what the exact provision will be in terms of Welsh language theatre.
The Arts Council will also meet later this week to discuss plans to reduce the number of Theatre in Education groups from eight to five and to merge the three Cardiff writing workshops into one bilingual group. BBC Wales's current affairs programme Taro Naw looks into the story on S4C on Monday. |
