Plans for Welsh theatre shake-up criticised

Clwyd Theatr Cymru set to become base for English theatre

The Arts Council of Wales is set to push through a controversial shake-up of theatre in Wales.

Critics of the proposed changes warn that the reorganisation could threaten the future of Welsh language theatre.

Critics say Welsh language productions may be threatened
The proposals involve turning Clwyd Theatr Cymru at Mold in Flintshire into the main base for English language theatre in Wales.

Funding there will increase to a 1m a year for the next three years.

But Theatr Gwynedd in Bangor and Theatr Bara Caws are to be merged, with no increase in their combined budget of 300,000.

Critics say Welsh language productions look set to lose out: Nic Ross, Former Drama Advisor to the Arts Council of Wales said: "It's not clear what the exact provision will be in terms of Welsh language theatre.

"It's not even certain at this moment that the Welsh language national performing company will be separate from the English language one based in Clwyd."

The Arts Council will also meet later this week to discuss plans to reduce the number of Theatre in Education groups from eight to five and to merge the three Cardiff writing workshops into one bilingual group.

BBC Wales's current affairs programme Taro Naw looks into the story on S4C on Monday.
