Ms Powell was taking a short break from reeling off numbers to regular punters hoping for a �10,000 maximum win when she was stunned to discover she had the winning ticket for a much bigger prize - the weekend National Lottery.

The 25-year-old from Ebbw Vale in south Wales, carried on with her evening's work before finding out the exact amount of her win - �7,173,623.

She said that although she regularly bought Lottery tickets, she had almost not bought a ticket in time for Saturday's draw.

After receiving her cheque at a champagne reception in a Cardiff hotel, Ms Powell, who has a three-year-old daughter, Jessica, said she had made sure her boyfriend Wayne Lawrence said he loved her before she told him of the win.

"Wayne and I have had an on-off relationship for eight years and I asked him if he loved me and whether he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me.

"He said of course he did - but I didn't say anything about the lottery. I didn't have any doubts in my mind about what he would say - but I just wanted to hear him say it," she said.

Ms Powell started bingo-calling to boost her earnings from her job in a clothes shop.

Stephanie Powell: "I want to tell the Stereophonics they're not the only millionnaires in Cwmaman now."

"But now everything is wonderful," she said. "We'll buy a car and a house and have a holiday. I'll also look after close friends and family, particularly my mum who has worked so hard all through her life to bring us up.

"At the moment we just don't know what we are going to do with all this money.
