Glossy book marks city centenary

Cardiff's City Hall

A glossy coffee table book on the history of Cardiff is being launched on Thursday to mark the city's centenary.

The 192-page publication, featuring images by the Magnum photographer David Hurn, covers Cardiff's industrial birth up to its status as a European capital.

It includes interviews with some famous sons and daughters, as well as the people "who keep the city going".

Cardiff's centenary as a city falls on 28 October 2005 and its 50th birthday as a capital on 20 December.

Dame Shirley Bassey wrote the introduction to the book called Cardiff - Rebirth of a Capital.

She said: "The Tiger Bay I left as a girl, hoping to make it big in the big wide world, had to change.

"Few of us raised in those friendly old neighbourhoods would recognise them today.

"Cardiff changed because it had to change with the world around it, and a lot of thinking and imagination has gone into planning how best to get that change right.

"Now we're on everyone's map!"

The book has been produced following a collaboration between Cardiff council and academics at Cardiff University.

Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Freda Salway, will launch the book at City Hall.
