Hundreds brave Christmas plunge
Porthcawl
Organisers said the event was the most successful ever
Hundreds of swimmers have crashed into the surf in south Wales to celebrate a sunny Christmas Day.

More than 3,000 people gathered for the 41st Christmas swim in Porthcawl - with around 400 men, women and children braving the chill of the sea.

Fundraisers said this year's swim had been the most successful yet, raising 41,000 for local groups.

"The event really has surpassed all our expectations," said Ian Stroud of the Christmas Morning Swim Committee.

'Perfect conditions'

Proceedings began at 1100 GMT with carol singing at the town's Hi Tide Inn, followed by the swim from 1145 GMT.

Mr Stroud said the event had attracted people of all ages from various parts of the country and beyond.

"We had people coming from Nottingham to take part and a South African in the area on holiday also joined in," he said.

Mr Stroud, who participated in the event, said: "I felt the cold from the knee down but after that it was okay.

"It was sunny and we had a nice gentle wave. It was perfect conditions really."
