A "virtual shop" selling Welsh products around the world is planning an expansion of its products and services following a takeover.

Launched in 1996, Wales Direct now has over 5,000 visitors a week ordering from a products ranging from Welsh literature, poetry, music, jewellery, pottery and the culinary delicacy laverbread.

Customers can see and read about the products range in either Welsh or English on the service's website where orders can be placed online.

The Welsh Development Agency has announced that the firm has been taken over by the Cardif-based company Imaginet, as its founder, Marc Holt from Pontypridd in south Wales, is planning to move to Australia.

He said he felt that Wales Direct was yet to reach its full potential

Imaginet's director of strategic development Greg Canon said: "Online shopping is one of the world's fastest growing areas of business.

"E-commerce revenues from travel, computers, books, CDs and toys expected to reach �1bn in Britain and exceed �100bn world-wide this year alone."
