Police horses are only used in the south of Wales at present

At present, the only force in Wales to use mounted police officers is South Wales Police.

Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom has said the use of mounted officers is a highly visible and popular means of policing.

The force hosted two police horses and their riders at the Victorian Extravaganza in Llandudno on Sunday.

The mounted police travelled from the Greater Manchester force to attend the three-day festival.

South Wales Police introduced a mounted section 12 years ago, and police horses are a common sight on match days and at big crowd events in Cardiff, particularly when the Millennium Stadium is being used.

Although the force only has nine animals at its disposal, they are used across cities, at Cardiff International Airport and to help search for missing persons.

The other Welsh forces often borrow them, suggesting the move to introduce them in north Wales could be a popular option with officers.
