Peter Law defeated Maggie Jones at the general election

Maggie Jones, defeated by independent Peter Law in Blaenau Gwent at the general election, is included in a list of nominations to the House of Lords.

The honours list containing Ms Jones' name appeared in a national newspaper.

Downing Street refused to comment on the leaked list. The official list is due to be published later this month.

Ms Jones was defeated in Blaenau Gwent on 5 May despite defending a 19,000 Labour majority - the party's largest in Wales.

Maggie Jones was selected by Labour from an all-woman shortlist

Ex-Labour Assembly Member Peter Law won the seat following a campaign which centred on the issue of all-woman shortlists for Labour candidates.

Mr Law, who left the Labour Party over the issue, won the seat with a 9,121 majority.

Ms Jones, a long-serving trade union official, will become a working peer in the Lords.

Deputy Welsh Health Minister John Griffiths defended the nomination saying she "deserves her peerage".

He added that she had done a lot of work and held a high profile as a union official and a Labour activist for many years.
