Thousands of fans packed the bars and streets of Cardiff ahead of the final of the Carling Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea at the Millennium Stadium.

Many had decided to make a weekend of it, with bars and clubs filled on Saturday night with supporters.

They joined Welsh rugby fans celebrating Wales' victory over France in Paris, which put the team at the top of the Six Nations' table.

Police said they had not had to deal with any football-related incidents.

The match kicked off at 1500 GMT, under a closed roof.

Pubs in Cardiff reported brisk trade by lunchtime ahead of the game.

A barmaid at the Borough in St Mary Street said they were very busy, adding: "It's chaotic in here."

Leon Blethyn, manager at the nearby Copa bar, said there was a good atmosphere among the drinkers.

"We've got both sets of fans in and they seem very friendly - they're all in good humour.

"Normally on these days it's pretty good. I know some pubs do segregate the fans but we don't.

He added: "Yesterday, it was busier in the afternoon because of the rugby. There's still a lot of people out today in their rugby shirts still celebrating!"
