Organisers hope the festival will be a real boost for tourism in the area |
The cousin of rock star Elvis Presley is making his first public appearance in Britain at the Porthcawl Elvis festival, which opens on Friday. Jerry Presley is helping to host some of the big events of the weekend, including a performance by Elvis' Gospel group, the Sweet Inspirations.
An Elvis speed dating event is among some of the activities which will take place over the three day festival
The event, now in its second year, is thought to be the biggest in Europe.
Event co-ordinator Peter Phillips said the festival would be a real boost for tourism in the local area.
He told the BBC News website: "They tell me you can't get a hotel room within 10 miles of Porthcawl, which hasn't happened since the war."
A Cardiff couple will also get married in an "Elvis-style ceremony" on the sea front during the convention.
Mr Phillips said one of the other highlights would be the world's first speed dating event devoted to the King of Rock n' Roll, who died in 1977.
Elvis wedding
"It's speed dating with the common denominator that everyone's an Elvis fan," he said.
"I don't think Elvis gear is compulsory but it will put you at the front of the queue."
And Mr Phillips hopes the dating competition will add to the attractions of next year's festival.
Elvis is among the most impersonated acts in the world |
"As it's customary that someone gets married during the festival - we hope that next year's couple meet at this year's speed dating."
There are 90 events in 25 venues around Porthcawl from Friday to Sunday, when the carnival closes.
Eighties pop star Steve Strange will be putting in an appearance, as will Mario Kombou, recently crowned in Memphis as the "world champion" Elvis.
But if locals or visitors become overwhelmed with Presley-mania there is one corner of sanity left in the town - the Jolly Sailor pub is running an "Elvis-free zone" all weekend.
