Clock ticking on pitch damage

Groundsmen at the Millennium Stadium are working against the clock to repair damage to the pitch ahead of the Wales v Hungary football match on Wednesday.

The pitch cut up during Wales' Six Nations rugby win over England on Saturday, leaving stadium bosses with a race against time to make repairs.

On Monday, stadium managers suspended the company responsible for the turf.

But on Tuesday the company, Inturf, said managers were aware of risks taken in relaying the pitch in the winter.

The 7,000 pallets which make up the state-of-the-art stadium's pitch were laid after the tsunami relief benefit concert held there on 22 January - two weeks before Wales' clash with England last weekend.

Both parties in the pitch dispute have agreed that the scheduling of concert so close to the opening Six Nations game was not to blame.

But Gareth Rees of Inturf, said: "Paul Sergeant (Millennium Stadium manager) was fully aware of all the risks when this pitch was put in for the Six Nations.

"Given the stadium, their events and their circumstances, he didn't have any other options.

"There was no other choice he could have taken, but he was aware of the risk at the time and to eliminate that risk, we could have perhaps kept the pitch a little bit wetter.

"Unfortunately the roof was closed for the match and all these things added up to the problems we saw on Saturday."

The company, which also looks after the ground at Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium, remains suspended and work on relaying 250 square metres of the pitch ahead of Wednesday's football international between Wales and Hungary is being carried out by another firm.

Stadium manager Paul Sergeant said the new pitch would be ready for the game and said of Inturf's reasons for the problems with the pitch:

"Everyone's entitled to their opinion, I've shared my feelings with them and we'll see how we go from here.

"First and foremost we've had to ensure we can stage tomorrow's game.

"The pitch is in good playing condition and we've had to turn to other expertise to get to that position."

Parts of the pitch from the weekend have been dug up are to be sold to raise money for the in aid of the Toby Lloyd Cockbain Foundation - a charity set up in memory of Wales second row Brent Cockbain's one-year-old son who died from a brain tumour last year.

"Only one game took place on this pitch and that's Wales versus England - a memorable day.

"And if we can raise a few pounds from the pitch rather than throwing it in the skip it's a fantastic result."
