Flooding in the Conwy Valley on Sunday

Mr Jones told the assembly that "it must be very distressing to be flooded for a second time within a year".

He said he would encourage the Environment Agency to come up with long term solutions "as soon as possible".

Meanwhile, rail services were suspended on Wednesday between Machynlleth and Aberdovey due to flooding.

On Monday, the Environment Agency warned that there was no "quick fix" for areas such as Llanrwst and Trefriw.

Some of the same householders were hit, who were affected in last February's floods.

The railway between Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog has also been closed indefinitely because of flood damage.

A spokeswoman for Network Rail said the line would be closed "until further notice" and replacement buses were being put on.

Mr Jones told AMs that around 50 properties were flooded in the Conwy Valley over the weekend.

He said the Assembly Government was increasing funding for flood defence improvement works, from �3.7m in the current year to �6.5m in 2007-2008.

Mr Jones said: "I understand the agency are looking at the options for longer term solutions to flood alleviation at Llanrwst and Trefriw and I would encourage them to come forward with proposals as soon as possible."

Phil Jones, from Environment Agency Wales, said two of the biggest floods in living memory had happened in 11 months.

"We might not have another one for another 50 years - these are extreme events and they are rare," he said.

"We have been carrying out a computer model of the Conwy Valley and our defences within the valley. "

Elizabeth Aylward, who lives in Trefriw, told BBC Radio Wales she expected the cost of repairing her property and replacing possessions to reach as much as �80,000."We had only really just settled back in, " she said.

"Last time, it cost about �80,000 to put right, and we are looking at about the same again. It's going to ruin us, basically."
